Creating a Grammar Teaching Video For a Flipped EFL Classroom

Hey there,

This week, I'm here to talk about something that excites me, it's the Flipped Classroom Approach! Flipped Classroom is defined as a pedagogical model in which traditional lecture and homework elements are reversed (Hamden et al, 2013; Lage et al, 2000). Focusing on student participation and active learning provides teachers with a better opportunity to deal with different levels of students and their differentiated learning styles in the classroom. We can use this approach in our EFL classrooms to create an effective learning environment. Since we have to teach students things like grammar, vocabulary, etc. one way or another, the flipped classroom approach is a good way to turn this into an engaging experience for the students. Most of the students find traditional lecturing monotonous and that's why they sometimes lack motivation. With the flipped classroom approach, we can create interesting videos for them to watch when they're home and in the classroom, we can help our students to work on the exercises they are normally supposed to as homework. So that all of the students will be able to learn at their own pace and study according to their learning style.

This week, our task was to create a grammar teaching video for a flipped EFL classroom. I and my partner Sebnem created an animated video with Powtoon. I prepared the video and Sebnem narrated it. We used the tool Powtoon because we wanted our video to be different than traditional lecture videos. With Powtoon, it was easy for us to point out the most important rules of our grammar topic Present Perfect. Since Powtoon isn't a free tool, we weren't able to benefit from all of its features. For example, we weren't able to make our video longer than 3 minutes. Still, the free version of the tool is enough to create a fun teaching video. If you want to try the tool yourself, you can click here. To see our grammar teaching video, click here!
